New Green Home to Rise from the Ashes in Doylestown Borough

An electrical power surge started a fast moving fire that drove a Doylestown Borough family from their home at 19 Chestnut Drive back in December 2006. The badly damaged home stood vacant for over two years while the family negotiated with their insurance company. Now this neighborhood eyesore is finally coming down to the existing foundation to make way for a new home better suited to the needs of a 21st Century family.

Two local brothers who own Webb Building Group Inc. purchased the burnt-out structure and can now start the process of tearing the house down to its foundation and building a new 4 bedroom, 2 ½ bath home under the Doylestown Borough's Green Points Program.

Doylestown's Green Points Program is a Green Building incentive program that encourages cost-effective and sustainable building methods that conserve fossil fuels, water and other natural resources, and promotes the reuse and recycling of construction materials and reduction of solid waste. The Program indentifies specific steps that builders can take to reduce, reuse and recycle. Builders are, in turn, rewarded with a 1% reduction in building permit fees for every point the structure earns.

The new home that Webb Building Group will build on Chestnut Drive has earned 38 out of a possible 50 points in the Green Points Program. "That is impressive considering this home was not eligible for some areas of the programs because they had to work with the existing foundation and landscaping," said Phil Elinger, Doylestown's planning director and assistant borough manager.

Working with LEED certified architect, Stampfl, Hartke Associates of Holicong, PA, Webb Building Group will include Energy Star windows, doors and appliances in the new 2,750-square-foot home.  "Using high efficiency systems and building materials, we anticipate this home will cost far less to heat, cool, and operate and will be more comfortable than the existing homes in this 45-year-old neighborhood, said Jim Webb. 

"Rebuilding this house provides the best of both worlds, added Brian Webb.  "The buyer of this home will get a brand new energy efficient home while enjoying the convenience of living in the Borough in a neighborhood with mature trees and landscaping."  The rebuilt home will be ready for occupancy before school starts in the fall.
